Historic Third Ward Neighborhood

You are staying in one of Houston's most historic neighborhoods. Third Ward is the birthplace of Juneteenth celebrations in Houston, and Emancipation Park down the street is the heart of that story.

Game Night Transportation

On Astros, Dynamo, or Rockets game nights, skip the car. Rideshare or walk and avoid the stadium parking scramble entirely.

Driving & Traffic Tips

Houston is a driving city for everything else. Give yourself buffer time on the freeways during rush hour, roughly 7 to 9 AM and 4 to 7 PM.

Best Months to Visit

Best months to visit are October through April. In summer, plan outdoor mornings and indoor afternoons.

The Houston Rodeo

If the Houston Rodeo is on (late February through March), go. Three weeks of concerts, carnival rides, and the best people watching in Texas.

Tex-Mex is a Food Group

Tex-Mex is a food group here. Even unassuming strip mall spots are usually great. When in doubt, order the fajitas.

A cozy vegan cafe and coffee shop in a historic Third Ward building, surrounded by plants. Great for a slow morning. Try the pistachio latte and the Mumbai sandwich. (3419 Emancipation Ave)

Caribbean Jerk Palace (6 min)

Island flavors right on Emancipation Ave. The jerk chicken and mac and cheese get rave reviews, and portions are generous. Park in the lot across the street. (3801 Emancipation Ave)

The Savoy (7 min)

A Third Ward favorite for Southern food, drinks, and a lively atmosphere. Go for happy hour and order the fried shrimp. It gets loud and fun on weekend nights. (4402 Emancipation Ave)

Eastbound Barbecue (5 min)

A newer EaDo barbecue spot with an Asian twist that locals are already raving about. The brisket smashburger is a sleeper hit. Family and dog friendly, with indoor and outdoor seating. Closed Monday and Tuesday. (EaDo)

J-Bar-M Barbecue (4 min)

Michelin-recognized Texas barbecue in a big, airy space just a few blocks away. Great for groups. Closed Mondays. (Leeland St)

Truth BBQ (15 min)

Some of the best brisket in Texas, and that is saying something. Go early because the good stuff sells out. Do not skip the tres leches cake. (The Heights)

Xochi (5 min)

Chef Hugo Ortega's love letter to Oaxacan cooking, right downtown near Discovery Green. The moles are the star. Order the mole tasting on your first visit and thank us later. (Downtown)

From historic parks to world-famous museums, explore the best of Houston.

Emancipation Park (Walking Distance)

One of the oldest parks in Texas, purchased by formerly enslaved Houstonians in 1872 to celebrate Juneteenth. Beautifully renovated, with walking paths, courts, and mosaic tributes to historical figures. A meaningful piece of this neighborhood's story, right down the street. (3018 Emancipation Ave)

Discovery Green (5 min)

Downtown's 12-acre gathering spot next to the convention center. Splash pad in summer, ice skating in winter, and free concerts and movies on the lawn year-round. (Downtown)

The Museum District (10 min)

Nineteen museums within walking distance of each other. Our picks: the Museum of Fine Arts and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Many offer free admission on Thursdays.

Downtown Aquarium (8 min)

A fun half-day with kids: shark tunnels, a stingray touch tank, and a small amusement area with a Ferris wheel.

Space Center Houston (30 min)

The official visitor center for NASA's Johnson Space Center. Take the tram tour to see historic Mission Control. Plan at least half a day for the trip southeast of the city.

Catch a Game

You are minutes from three major venues. Shell Energy Stadium (Dynamo) is about a half mile away, close enough to walk on match days. Daikin Park (Astros) and Toyota Center (Rockets) are a short drive or rideshare. Game nights in EaDo are a whole experience.

Third Ward Coffee Crawl

Kefita Coffee for Ethiopian pour-overs in a converted house, Retrospect Coffee Bar in a repurposed vintage gas station, and The Rado Market for an oxtail burger with your latte. All within a few minutes of the house.

Explore Montrose & The Heights (10-15 min)

Houston's two best wandering neighborhoods. Montrose for vintage shops, galleries, and The Menil Collection (always free). The Heights for 19th Street boutiques and Victorian homes.

Galveston Day Trip (1 hour)

Beach time, the historic Strand district, and Pleasure Pier for the kids. Go on a weekday if you can, since summer weekends get packed. About an hour drive from the house.
